Argentine Primera División is the top football league in Argentina where 20 clubs contest the title. The season in Primavera runs from August till May and consists of initial and final tournaments: the Torneo Inicial that starts in August and finishes in December and the second tournament Torneo Final that starts in February and runs till June. The winners of the tournaments then play in the final match to decide the champion. The teams that finish bottom and second to bottom face relegation to the Primera B Nacional.
The league was created in 1891 and gained professional status in 1931. Argentina became the second country in the world after the United Kingdom that established a regular championship. Overall 16 clubs claimed the trophy throughout the league’s history. The most titled teams are River Plate that clinched 34 trophies, Boca Juniors that won the League 30 times and Independiente with 16 victories.
The teams that have the worst three-year average of points face relegation to the lower division. Five top teams get a chance to play in Copa Libertadores.
Overall 108 clubs have taken part in the Primera División since the first professional season in 1931. Independiente and Boca Juniors are the only outfits that played in every season and never have been relegated.
