The Austrian Football Bundesliga is the highest-ranking football league in Austria. The competition provides the winner of the Austrian championship and the country’s qualifiers for different UEFA cups. The Austrian Bundesliga was inaugurated in the 1974/1975 season and was re-registered in 1991. Nowadays it comprises two divisions.
Football has been played in Austria since around 1890. In 1911 the first national championship was organized by the Lower Austrian Football Federation. Clubs from other regions were first allowed to participate in this competition only in 1937 when the National League was founded. After Austria was annexed by Germany in 1938, local teams played in the Gauliga Ostmark. When the World War II was over, all-Austrian Staatsliga A was founded in 1949. However in the same year Viennese amateur clubs came into conflict with professional clubs and established their own competition. As a result, only Lower Austrian teams remained in the Staatsliga A. In 1965 the Austrian Football Association started to organize new national league, and in 1974 the Austrian Bundesliga was founded. In 1991 the Bundesliga was re-registered as a separate federation. Nevertheless, it’s a member of the Austrian Football Association.
Rapid Wien is the most titled club in the country. They won 32 national championships.
