The Azerbaijan Premier League, or as it is often called Topaz Premyer Liqası, is the top tier of the Azerbaijani football system founded in 1992.
The league title is contested by 12 clubs from August to May. Each club plays 22 matches a season on a home and away basis. The championship winner qualifies for the UEFA Champions League Second qualifying round for the next season. The runner-up and the third-placed team get their spots in the Europa League. The two teams that finish bottom at the end of a season are classed down to the Azerbaijan First Division meanwhile two teams from the second tier replace them in the top flight.
Neftchi Baku became the first club to win the championship in its inaugural 1992 season. They also hold a record of being the most honored team in Azerbaijan with 7 titles in their tally.
The Azerbaijan Premier League is proud of its players renowned worldwide for their impressive records. Nazim Aliyev established himself as the league all-time top scorer with 183 goals, he also holds a record of a best scorer in one season with 39 goals in 1992. Azer Mammadov and Mahmud Gurbanov made most league appearances (445 and 421 respectively) for Kapaz since 1992 till 2012.
