Belarusian Premier League was formed by the Belarusian Football Federation in 1992. Since 1996 the season lasts during the summer period. There are 12 teams in the top division, though that figure varied between 17 and 12 throughout the history of the league.
The very first season 1992 was short and no participating team relegated. In the 1992/93 season there were 17 participating teams, later the number of teams has was changed several times. 12 teams compete in the tournament now.
In 2013 a new system was introduced: 12 teams are divided into two groups. The lowest team in the table relegates to Belarusian First League and the winner of Belarusian First League gets promotion to the top flight. The second lowest team faces the second best from Belarusian First League in play-off.
BATE Borisov are the most titled team. Since 2006 they’ve champions. The second best team are Dinamo Minsk, who are five-time winners.
