The league winner gets a chance to compete in the UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds, the second and third-placed teams advance to the qualifying rounds of the UEFA Europa League. The Bulgarian Cup winner gets a place in the UEFA Europa League play-offs. In case the Bulgarian Cup winner has already qualified for a European tournament, the place in the UEFA Europa League goes to Bulgarian Cup runner-up. If the latter has already got a place, so the place is given to the fourth best team in the league.
The history of the football championship in the country goes back to 1924, but the league system was introduced between 1937 and 1940. In 1948 A Republican Football Group was established and the following season it was decided to hold the tournament from spring to autumn, as in the USSR. Initially ten teams were in the league, later the number of teams varied and since the 1957/58 season there were 16 teams. In 1958 the championship was changed to autumn-spring cycle.
In 2000 the A Republican Football Group was changed with the Premier Professional Football League and the league had 14 participating teams. The A Professional Football Group was founded in 2003. Since then it has 16 teams.
CSKA Sofia and PFC Levski Sofia are the two most successful teams in Bulgaria.
