The Chilean Primera División is the top tier of the football system in Chile founded in 1933. Since 2010, the league is commonly known as the Campeonato Nacional Petrobras due to sponsorship reasons.
The league title is contested by 18 clubs usually from January to December. The championship is divided in two parts: the Opening Championship (Campeonato Apertura) and the Closing Championship (Campeonato Clausura), where every club plays with each other on a single round-robin basis amassing 34 games a season. Thus, there are two champions per season who win a ticket to the second stage of Copa Libertadores held by CONMEBOL. The third-placed team in the aggregate table gets into the first stage of the above tournament. Two teams that are placed bottom following the results of the campaign are classed down to the Primera B, meanwhile two teams from the second tier replace them in the top flight.
Magallanes became the first club to win the title in the inaugural 1933 season. However, Colo-Colo established themselves as the most honored club with 29 titles in total. It’s a tidbit that Colo-Colo recorded the longest winning streak winning four titles in a row. Such legendary players as Francisco Valdés and Pedro González Vera remain the Chilean all-time top-scorers with 215 and 212 goals respectively.
