Superleague Greece is the top tier of Greek professional football. The league was founded in 2006 and replaced Alpha Ethniki tournament that was held from the season 1927/1928. The title is contested by 16 teams. The season runs from August to May and each team plays one “home” game and one “away” game. The championship is ranked 10th by the UEFA coefficients.
The club that finishes atop of the league qualifies to the Champions League. The teams that occupy places from second to fifth compete for the second ticket to the most prestigious European tournament in play-offs. Three clubs from the league and the winner of the Greek Cup play in the Europa League.
More than 65 clubs competed for the title since the first season, but only six teams claimed the trophy. The most titled team is Olympiacos that collected 39 trophies; Panathinaikos won the league 20 times and AEK 11 times. Overall, the clubs from only four Greek towns clinched the trophy (Larissa, Thessaloniki, Athens and Piraeus).
Three teams that finish bottom of the league are classed down to Football League. Three best sides from Football League are promoted to the top flight, but the number of clubs may change if they do not pass a licensing procedure.
