Top football teams in Hong Kong compete in First Division League which is the oldest championship in Asia, dating back to 1908.
The format of the tournament is similar to that of most European championships with 10 squads playing home and away games with the other ones two times. Still, many clubs don’t have their own stadia and have to play both legs at the same ground. Hong Kong Stadium, Mongkok Stadium, Siu Sai Wan Sports Ground hold most matches. At the end of the season two worst teams get relegated to the Second Division.
The Hong Kong Football Association applies the restriction on the number of foreign players to be included in squads. Clubs can only sign up to 7 footballers without Hong Kong citizenship and just 5 of them can take a pitch at a time.
South China possesses most silverware in the history of Hong Kong football with 40 titles so far. Recently Kitchee club has been the most successful one gaining the last two champion titles.
