J. League Division 1 is the top professional football league in Japan and one of the most successful leagues in Asia. The title is contested by 18 clubs; the teams compete in double round robin with one “home” and one “away” game. Season starts in March and runs till December.
The first football championship in Japan was called Japan Soccer League and included but the title in amateur clubs. Professional J League was established in 1992 in order to develop and promote top quality football system in the country and create a number of professional clubs. Originally 10 clubs competed in the tournament.
Top four clubs qualify to the Asian Champions League, while four bottom teams face relegation to the J. League Division 2.
The most successful team in the tournament in terms of the clinched titles is Kashima Antlers that took the trophy 7 times, Júbilo Iwata and Yokohama F. Marinos won the league 3 times and Tokyo Verdy clinched 2 titles. In 2009 a rule that permits only four foreign players in the squad was adopted.
