The Latvian Higher League is the top tier of the Latvian football system founded in 1927.
The league title is contested by 10 clubs from April to November. Each club plays each other four times on a home and away basis totaling 36 matches a season. The championship winner qualifies for the UEFA Champions League Second qualifying round for the next season. The runner-up, the third-placed and the fourth-placed teams get their spots in the Europa League. The two teams that finish bottom at the end of a season are classed down to the Latvian First League meanwhile two teams from the second tier replace them in the top flight.
Olimpija Liepāja became the first club to win the championship in its inaugural 1927 season. Skonto Rīga hold a record of being the most honored team in Latvia with 15 titles in their tally.
