The Portuguese Segunda Liga is the second strongest football championship in Portugal. The League was founded in 1990 under the name of Segunda Divisão de Honra. Prior to that the clubs competed in the only professional football league in the country called Primeira Divisão. It was Segunda Divisão, the regional league, where the clubs played for promotion to the top flight.
In 1999, the Portuguese League for Professional Football which governed the game in the country, renamed the tournament to Liga de Honra due to sponsorship reasons, while Segunda Divisão turned into the third strongest level.
Since the season 2006/2007 16 clubs have been competing in the second-tier but in 2012 it was decided to include six reserve squads of the strongest Portuguese teams to the tournament which resulted in an extended group of 22 clubs. The tournament is a classic division with two top teams promoted to Primeira Liga and three bottom ones relegated.
Paços de Ferreira are the most successful team with three titles of the championship and Estoril Praia are the current champions.
