The Qatar Stars League, or as it is often called Q-League, is the top tier of the Qatari football system founded in 1963.
The league title is contested by 12 clubs from September to April. Each club plays 22 matches a season on a home and away basis. The three best teams of the season qualify for the AFC Champions League for the next season. The team that finish bottom at the end of a season is classed down to the Qatari Second Division thus giving a place to the winner of the second tier. It’s a tidbit that initially the league didn’t practice relegation and promotion system. It came into force only in 1981.
The first Qatar Stars League campaign dates back to 1963/64. However, the first official season was played in 1972/73. With 12 Qatar Stars League titles, Doha side Al-Sadd SC holds a record as the most honored club since the league inception.
The Qatar Football Association makes a great impact on the Qatar Stars League development. In 2003, it allocated funds to each Q-League club for buying renowned foreign players, thus, such footballers as Pep Guardiola, Gabriel Batistuta and Ronald and Frank de Boer featured in the top Qatari League. Moreover, like many other football associations, QFA introduced an award system to the Qatar Stars League favoring the best player and coach of the season.
