The top division of the Romanian football system in named Liga I. It was founded in 1909. Initially the league was named Divizia A, but then the name was changed.
In 1970 A Divisional College was established, it was run by Angelescu, but was formal till the beginning of 1990s. The name of that organization was changed several times. In January 1993 the clubs of A-Division were represented in Professional Football League of Romania and in June 1993 the clubs of B-Division joined. The A-Division Championship was held in the 1997/98 season.
Currently there are 18 teams in the highest division of the Professional Football League of Romania. Four bottom-teams are relegated at the end of the season and these four teams are replaced with four top teams from Liga 2.
Since 2007/08 the top two Liga I teams get a chance to play in the UEFA Champions League and those teams which are place third and fourth they compete in the UEFA Europa League.
The most titled teams are Steaua București and Dinamo București, which won 23 and 18 titles respectively.
