Premier Soccer League is a top competition in South Africa.
The tournament was created in 1996 when the National Soccer League and the National Premier Soccer League reached an agreement on holding a single competition.
The origins of professional football in South Africa stem from the late 1950s when 12 amateur clubs formed the National Football League, though at the times of racial segregation most clubs consisted of white players.
In 1961 the newly established South African Football league allowed black colored players to compete in the matches. In 1970 one more league under the title National Professional League emerged. These tournaments existed alongside each other for three decades and it was only in 1996 that one league was formed.
The title of the League is contested by 16 clubs. A season runs from August to May with each club playing the other twice including home and away fixtures. The champion qualifies to the Orange CAF Champions League. The team that finishes bottom is relegated to the National First Division, while the club that rests second to bottom competes in the relegation play-offs.
The most titled club is Mamelodi Sundowns that claimed 5 trophies.
