Swiss Super League is the top professional league in Swiss football pyramid. The championship is ranked as 14th strongest according to the UEFA league coefficients. The tournament was founded in 1897 under the title Serie A and throughout its history changed several names, including 1 Ligue, Ligue National, Challenge National and Ligue Nationale A.
The trophy is contested by 10 teams. The season runs from September to May. The team that finishes first receives a chance to play in the Champions League, while second and third places qualify to the Europe Cup. The Schweizer Cup winner receives a ticket to the Europe League.
The club that finishes bottom is relegated to the Challenge League, the side that occupies 9th position at the end of the season plays with the second team from the Challenge League for the right to compete in the top flight.
The team that claimed most titles is Grasshopper Club that won the league 27 times. Servette FC clinched the trophy 17 times; FC Basel took 15 trophies and FC Zürich 12.
Teams from Liechtenstein also may take part in the league if they gain promotion from the lower leagues. The biggest stadium of the league is St. Jakob-Park that sits 38,500 football fans.
