The Ukrainian Premier League is the top league of the Ukrainian championship. The national tournament was established in 1991 after the Soviet championship seized to exist. The first name of the tournament was the Supreme League, yet in 2008 as the championship became more independent from the Ukrainian football governing bodies, it received its current title.
Throughout the season the clubs play each other twice, making in total 30 matches per season. The league runs from mid-July till mid-June and due to weather conditions makes a winter break after 15 rounds of matches that last for three months (from December to March). As a result, the winter break is much longer than in other European leagues.
The title is contested by 16 clubs. The teams that finish at the top of the table get the chance to play in the European continental tournaments (the Champions League and the Europa Cup), the clubs that finish bottom and second to bottom face relegation to the First League and the two top clubs from the First League compete in the Premier League in the following season.
Dynamo Kyiv claimed 13 league titles, Shakhtar won the tournament 7 times and Tavriya Simferopol tasted the golden honors in the very first championship. Shakhtar Donetsk, Dynamo Kyiv, , Tavriya Simferopol and Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk played in all 21 Ukrainian competitions.
The symbol of the Ukrainian Premier League depicts a football with the blue-yellow stripe (the colors of the national flag of Ukraine). Above the ball there are 16 stars which stand for 16 clubs that participate in the tournament.
