Uruguayan Primera División is the highest professional competition in the football league system of the country. It was founded in 1900 making itself one of the oldest leagues on South American continent. However, initially it existed as an amateur league and only in 1932 the Primera División got a professional status.
The league title is contested by 16 clubs usually from August to May. The championship is divided in two parts: the Opening Championship (Torneo Apertura) and Closing Championship (Torneo Clausura), where every club plays with each other once amassing 30 games a season. At the end of the season, a two-legged final match between the winners of two competitions is held to determine the Primera División champion. The system of promotion and relegation is applied to the league. Three teams that are placed bottom following the results of the current and previous seasons are classed down to the Segunda División, meanwhile three teams from the second tier replace them in the top flight. The best two teams of the top league win a ticket to the second stage of Copa Libertadores, the elite cup competition in Uruguay. The third-placed team gets into the first stage of the above tournament and the next three clubs qualify to the first stage of Copa Sudamericana.
The first club to win the title during the amateur era was Central Uruguay Railway Cricket Club, or CURCC, which later became known as Peñarol. Peñarol has also established itself as the most titled club with 46 titles in total. Nacional is the second most influential club with 44 titles in the Uruguayan championship. It’s a tidbit that none of the rest clubs won the Primera División more than 4 times.
