The Welsh Premier League is the highest division of the Welsh football league system. Until 2002 it was named the League of Wales.
The creation of the football league in Wales was initiated by Secretary General of the Football Association of Wales, Alun Evans, and the league was founded in 1992. The Football Association of Wales was a member of FIFA but it didn’t have a football league. The top Welsh teams competed in the English leagues. Several clubs remained a part of the English football league but gradually joined the League of Wales.
The teams in the north relegate to the Cymru Alliance and the teams in the south relegate to the Welsh Football League Division One. The winners of regional league promote to the top division and the total amount of teams participating in the top division varied and in 2010/11 it was decided to reduce the number of teams to 12.
The league winner gets a chance to qualify for the UEFA Champions League. The runner-up and third placed team qualify for the UEFA Europa League first round and the cup winner go to the second qualifying round of the Europa League.
