History and achievements
TSV 1860 München is a Munich-based club founded in 1860.
Since its establishment the club regularly competed in German upper leagues. They were close to claim their first major silverware already in 1931 but lost the final league match to Hertha Berlin. The team tasted their first league honors ten years later, in 1941, finishing atop of the Gauliga Bayern and repeating the feat in 1943. In 1942, the club collected their first German Cup trophy.
The 1960s turned to be a glorious period for 1860 München. It was one of the clubs to found a new professional league, the Bundesliga, in 1963 where they entered as national reigning champions having won the Oberliga Süd that year. The team’s trophy cabinet welcomed their second German Cup in 1964 and the Bundesliga title in 1966. Moreover, 1860 München finished runner-up in the 1965 UEFA Cup Winners Cup beaten by West Ham United 2-0 in the final.
The 1970s and 1980s saw a string of poor TSV performances. The club was rotating between the third and second divisions until it finally fought back a ticket to the top flight ahead of the 1994/95 season. After a decade-long stint in the top tier, 1860 München slumped to the 2.Bundesliga and competes there till today.
The team are nicknamed Die Löwen (the Lions) or the Sixty’ers. They hold their home games at the 71,137 seater Allianz Arena, which they share with city rivals Bayern Munich.
