History and achievements
Associação Académica de Coimbra also known as Académica de Coimbra or simply Académica is an autonomous professional football organization from Coimbra, Portugal. The team was created by students who participated in the national amateur championship. They wanted their hobby to develop into something bigger. So at one of the meetings they approved the professional club’s charter after which all necessary activities were performed and the club became an official member of the professional league in 1876.
Throughout many years the club played rather successfully in various Portuguese championships. The team was relegated but then returned to the country’s top championship. Having originated from a student community, the club is currently supported by a great number of young people who do a great job at the stadium to help their favorite team gain resounding victories over opponents. In 1939 the club had one of its biggest successes having won Portuguese Cup.
Académica’s stadium is called Estádio Cidade de Coimbra: it is their home arena where the most important and crucial matches take place. The stadium’s capacity is 30.000 seats. It is one of the biggest stadiums in Portugal – naturally, behind the Big Three stadiums. Until 2003 the stadium was called Estádio Municipal de Coimbra and had 15.000 seats. After the stadium was renovated before the UEFA Euro 2004, its capacity grew by 15.000 seats. The stadium also hosts various events: e.g. The Rolling Stones concert gathered 50.000 spectators at Estádio Cidade de Coimbra.
