History and achievements
AEK is a Greek football club located in Athens. The club was founded in 1924 by Greek refugees that escaped from Constantinople after the Greco-Turkish War. The home stadium of the club is the Athens Olympic Stadium that has a capacity of 69,618 seats.
AEK won 11 league titles, 14 Greek Cups, 2 Super Cups and captured the 1990 Greek League Cup. The team regularly takes part in the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League, being a member of the European Club Association as well.
The club was regarded as a powerhouse in Greek football in the 90s. From 1992 to 1994 AEK won three subsequent top league titles. In the 1994/1995 season AEK became the first Greek side that took part in the UEFA Champions League final group stage. The next year saw AEK lift the 1996 Greek Cup.
Following AEK’s shameful performance in the 2002 UEFA Champions League, the club suffered serious financial troubles, which led to conflicts between some of the key players and the management. Eventually, the side lost many of its prominent footballers and was on the verge of bankruptcy and further relegation to lower divisions.
Despite financial problems AEK managed to save its place in the Superleague Greece and even capture the 2011 Greek Cup.
However, the season 2012/2013 was a disastrous one as the legendary club got relegated to Second division for the first time in its long history.
