You can hardly find an ardent football fan that does not know the name of one of the most prominent European clubs - Ajax that represents the city of Amsterdam, Netherlands.
Ajax was founded in 1900. The rise of the team started in the 1930s when the club collected five titles of the national championship. Thirty years later Ajax became the dominant force in the league again, claiming the national titles in 1966, 1976, 1970. In 1971 the European success followed as Ajax clinched the European cup, defeating in the final Panathinaikos 2-0. The trophies of the Dutch national championship and KNVB Cup followed and overall during that decade Ajax would also celebrate victories in the Intercontinental Cup and take a third consecutive European Cup.

At the time the club was founded, the logo of the team depicted a picture of an Ajax player. In 1928 the crest with the head of the Greek hero Ajax was presented. In 1990 the emblem was transformed into an abstract depiction of the previous symbol: the new crest shows the portrait of Ajax drawn with 11 lines that refer to 11 players on the field.
The official colors of the club are red, black and white and they reflect the colors of the city of Amstrdam. In 1911 the club introduced a particular uniform with white shirt and a broad, vertical red stripe over chest and back.
The nicknames of the team are the Sons of the Gods, the Amsterdammers and the Lancers. The home games of the club are played at the Amsterdam arena that was opened in 1996. The stadium has a capacity of 52,342.
