Al-Arabi is a Qatari football club currently competing in the Qatar Stars League. Founded as club Al-Tahrir in 1952, it is the second oldest team in the country.
The club began their way in the Qatari Second Division and made their first run into the top tier in 1982. Al-Arabi got off to a flying start as they claimed their first Qatar Stars League title already in their debut 1982/83 season. The 1990s turned to be the most glorious period for the club. They won five Qatar Stars League titles, two Emir of Qatar Cups, the Qatar Crown Prince Cup and Qatar Sheikh Jassem Cup during the decade.
However, their success changed to a downturn in the 2000s. Throughout the decade, Al-Arabi didn’t welcome a single domestic honour to their trophy cabinet saying nothing of their elimination from the 2012 AFC Champions League. Moreover, they suffered their biggest ever 0-7 defeat to Al Sadd. Only in 2010, Al-Arabi tasted the first silverware in the last 13 years that was the Sheikh Jassem Cup.
Al-Arabi is proud of its former notorious players such as Gabriel Batistuta and Mubarak Mustafa who had their glorious spells at the club. The club’s terrific performances until the 2000s earned Al-Arabi such nicknames as the Dream Team, the Century Club and the Red Devils. They had one of the largest fan bases in the whole Qatar. Al-Arabi play their home matches at the 18,000-seater Grand Hamad Stadium in Doha.
