Al-Gharafa is a Qatari football club founded in 1979. The club was initially called Al-Ittihad and aimed to represent Al-Gharafa district in football competitions.
Al-Gharafa began their way per aspera ad astra from the Qatari Second Division. They got off to a flying start as the team won the league title already in their debut 1979/80 season. It should be mentioned though that it was much to Sheikh leaders’ financial and material support that Al-Gharafa was integral to success in their early years.
The team went on their success claiming their first major silverware in the shape of Qatari League title in 1992 and repeated the feat in 1994. Since 1995 till 1998, the club welcomed four successive Emir of Qatar Cups and in 2000 they tasted their first Qatar Crown Prince Cup. In 2004, the club officially got their current name Al-Gharafa.
The team are proud of their former notorious non-Qatar players such as Europeans Marcel Desailly and Hakan Yakin and Brazilians Zé Roberto, Fernandão and of course Araújo who established himself as the club’s legend helping Al-Gharafa to set up a record of scoring the highest number of goals in the 2007/08 season.
The team are often nicknamed the Cheetahs. Their home matches are played at the 25,000-seater Al-Gharafa Stadium in Doha.
