Al-Shabab established itself as one of the most prominent clubs in the United Arab Emirates. They impressed in 1975 when they finished as runners-up in the UAE Emir Cup and claimed their first silverware in 1981. The 1990s were the most fruitful period for the team as they won two UAE League titles, three UAE Emir Cups and the Gulf Club Champions Cup. They also made two appearances in the Asian Club Championship (in 1992 and 1996) and three appearances in Asian Cup Winners Cup. Al-Shabab even became a runner-up in the latter tournament in the 1994/95 season losing the final match to Japanese club Yokohama Flügels.
The team’s success changed to a downturn in the early 2000s. Al-Shabab hasn’t won a single trophy in the period and showed poor results in the league competitions finishing in the lower half of the table. They recuperated their lost positions in 2008 when became UAE Champions. In 2009 and 2012, the club enjoyed a meteoric rise taking part in the AFC Champions League group stage.
The team play their home matches at Maktoum bin Rashid Stadium in Dubai which can hold up to 18,000 spectators.
