Russian football club Alania was founded in Vladikavkaz in 1921.
The first Vladikavkaz football championship which took place in 1921 was won by Alania’s predecessor and they defended the title for three years in a row.
Alania was a famous club already in the Soviet times: the club played in the first and second league championships under various names. In 1995 the Vladikavkaz team won the Russian Championship – the only club to interrupt the hegemony and steal the championship title from Spartak Moscow in the 90s – and in 1996 finished second only behind the great capital club.
In the 2005 season Alania finished in the 15th place and was relegated from the Premier League to the first division where it played in 2007-2009. On May 11, 2011 Alania got the right to play in the UEFA Europa League after a victory over Rostov. In the 90s the team used to be a frequent participant of the European tournaments’ qualification rounds.
In 2012/2013 Alania competed in the Premier League but got relegated despite adding some solid players to the roster, such as Renan Bressan and Royston Drenthe.
Due to financial problems the club was dissolved at the beginning of 2014.
