Albirex Niigata is a football team in Japan. Initially it was a non-professional team, based in 1955, and since then they had played in minor local leagues.
After the foundation of the J. League in 1992 they gradually advanced to the top flight, having passed through lower divisions. In 1998, Albirex Niigata played in the Japan Football League and the following year played in the J2. At that period the team strengthened and became competitive enough to reach the J1. In 2003, they won the J. Leadue division 2 thus advancing to the top division.
The team’s name is combined of the star name, Albireo, and Rex that means ‘king’ in Latin. Initially since the foundation in 1955 they were named Niigata Eleven Soccer Club, in 1995 became Albireo Niigata FC and in 1997 it was changed into Albirex Niigata.
Having joined the J. League in 1999, the team is based in two towns, Niigata, Niigata and Seiro, Niigata. Most of the games they play at Niigata Stadium Big Swan (now called Tohoku Denryoku Big Swan Stadium) and also use Niigata Perfectural Sport Ground. The first one is the ground where the home matches are held, its capacity is 42,300.
