Argentinos Juniors is an Argentinean football team located in La Paternal, Buenos Aires.
The club was born on August 14, 1904. The first competitive game came against Club La Prensa. That was a miserable day for Argentinos as the team suffered a 12-1 defeat. In 1934 the club joined the Primera División. However, the year of 1937 brought about the side`s relegation to the lower division as Argentinos finished the season in the drop zone. In 1940 the club enjoyed an impressive campaign and secured the Primera B Nacional title. Nevertheless, Argentinos failed to get promotion as its home stadium didn`t meet the requirements of the Primera División.
In 1955 the team finally won their ticket to the elite division. On October 20, 1976 Diego Maradona got his first run-out for Argentinos Juniors. It was a memorable day for Argentinean football. In 1981 the mercurial Argentinian captain switched to Boca Juniors.
In 1984 Argentinos clinched the Metropolitano Championship. A year later the club sealed another league title. That year also saw Argentinos lift the Copa Libertadores and the Copa Interamericana. But after that glory the club`s form slumped and in 1996 Argentinos fell into the second division. In 2004 the club won the Primera B Nacional and returned to the elite division. The team also managed to secure the 2010 Clausura.
The club is nicknamed El Semillero because many world-class players including Sergio Batista, Claudio Borghi, Diego Maradona, Juan Román Riquelme and Fernando Redondo began their academic scholarship with Argentinos Juniors.
