History and achievements
In 1886 a group of workers from the weapon production factory sat their minds on creating a football team. This date is considered to be Arsenal’s birth date. The first name of the club was ‘Dial Square’ which, however, was later changed to ‘Royal Arsenal’.
The team got the professional status in 1891, and transformed the name to ‘Woolwich Arsenal’. At the beginning of the 20th century ‘Woolwich’ prefix was not used anymore, and that is how the club finally got the name we are used to.
The football club played its home games at Highbury stadium. Arsenal started taking part in the English championship in 1893 and played in the second division, but 11 years later the ‘Gunners’ managed to climb higher and started playing in the first division.
In 1925 Herbert Chapman was appointed as the head coach of the club and from that moment on the team won the English championship 5 times in 8 years making this period the golden age of the team. The next rise of the club happened only several decades later in 1971 when the club took the champion title and the English cup. Those victories were the new head coach George Graham’s work fruits. The ex-player of the club, Graham managed to win 6 trophies in 9 years with Arsenal: 2 League Cups, the FA Cup, 2 Championships and one UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup.
The next step in the history of Arsenal is undoubtedly connected with a French expert Arsene Wenger. With Wenger’s spell the club changed the style for a more attacking one and refused to play dull football. What is even more essential is that Wenger helped to discover new great players such as Dennis Bergkamp, Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira. Under his management Arsenal finished the season with no defeats at all!
In 2006 Arsenal moved from its old ‘Highbury’ stadium to a modern ‘Emirates’ arena. This step had a great impact on the rise of the profits of the club as the ‘Emirates’ capacity exceeds significantly that of the previous stadium. Today Arsenal completes the top 10 of the richest clubs in Europe, and unlike Liverpool and Manchester United does not have any debts.
In 2014 The Gunners lifted their first trophy since 2005 after beating Hull City in the final of the FA Cup at Wembley.
