Agremiação Sportiva Arapiraquense, commonly known as ASA, is a Brazilian football club from Arapiraca, Alagoas state, founded in 1952. It’s a tidbit that a Portuguese word ‘asa’ means ‘a wing’ in English. So the team are often nicknamed the Asa Gigante (the Giant Wing).
The club got off to a flying start of their career as they claimed the Campeonato Alagoano title already in 1953. Though it was a surprising championship win as in the finals ASA’s opponent Ferroviário refused to play against them and the team was declared champion of the tournament. Overall, ASA won 7 Alagoas titles.
The team plays the majority of their seasons in Série B or Série C. The club’s first run into the top flight dates back to 1979. However, ASA have never reached the same heights again as the year 1979 remained their only campaign in the forefront. In 2001, the club made their debut in the Brazilian Cup though they’ve never climbed up further then the second stage.
The team play their home games at Municipal Coaracy da Mata Fonseca stadium which can hold up to 17,000 spectators.
