Club de Fútbol Atlante is a football club in Mexico, located in Cancún. The team was founded in 1916 and initially was named Sinaloa. Later the team’s name was changed into Lusitania and U-53, but then it was named Atlante. The team became one of the teams competing in the Liga Mayor after they had passed the proof, winning Toluca and América. Atlante’s popularity had grown, they won the Campeón de Campeones and Copa México in 1941/42 and, when the Professional League was formed in 1943, the team was one of the ten clubs which formed the Mexican Primera División. Atlante finished the 1946/47 season with the league title. In the 1950s they won the Copa México in 1950/51 and 1951/52. In 1951/52 they were Campeón de Campeones winners.
In 1966 Atlante was sold to Fernando González, the team’s performance worsened and in 1976 they faced relegation to Segunda División. In the 1976/77 season Atlante won promotion to the top flight and in October 1978 the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social became their owner. After that their results improved and in 1981/82 the team finished the league runners-up losing to Tigres. In 1983 they won CONCACAF Champions’ Cup. In 1989, The DDF sold the team was sold to a new owner, Jose Antonio García, and they faced relegation. Nevertheless winning the Segunda División in the 1990/91 they returned to the top division. Atlante was the league winner for the second time in the 1992/93 season.
The team won the Apertura 2007 thus qualifying to the CONCACAF Champions’ Cup in 2008, where they reached the quarterfinals, and the SuperLiga 2008, where they reached the semifinals.
Atlante play their home matches at Estadio Andrés Quintana Roo, which has a capacity of 20,000.
