History and achievements
FC Augsburg was founded back in 1907. The football team is based in the town of the same name in the Bavarian province. The team had never won until the beginning of the Second World War. Only once in 1940 they managed to take second place in the Gauliga Bayern. After the war ‘Augsburg’ has been a regular participant in the Oberliga Sud occasionally falling down to lower division.
In 1974 the football team Augsburg had all chances to advance and reach the Bundesliga, but they lacked just one point.
Just in 1982 Augsburg succeeded in appearing in the Bundesliga 2 for the first time, however they didn’t stay long there and were relegated next spring. The club stagnated in minor German leagues up to 2006 when they finished seventh in the Bundesliga 2.
In 2010 the football club managed to jump at the third position, which guaranteed play-off matches for Bundesliga 1 qualification. The team faced a strong FC Nuremberg side that beat Augsburg with total score of 3-0. This was the best season in the history of the club so far. Next year the team improved by occupying the second spot in the standings. It allowed Augsburg to compete with the clubs of the top league within the framework of German national championship for the first time.
In its history Augsburg has spent eight seasons in the Second Bundesliga, twelve seasons in the Regional League (Sud), 14 seasons were spent in the Oberliga South and nineteen seasons in the Bayernliga. In the past, and specifically until 1950, the club performed at BCA Stadion that seated up to twenty thousand fans. The stadium was very old, even the stands were made of wood. The present Augsburg team is training at this stadium.
The team competed at Rosenaustadion until 2009, but it has recently moved to Impulse Arena, that had been built for FIFA Women’s World Cup 2011. This stadium seats 19000 spectators. Besides it is possible to place some 10 thousand people more provided they don’t mind standing.
The team has not brought up world-famous stars, but it is worth mentioning certain players, performing for the team in the past: Karl-Heinz Riedle, Bernd Schuster, Helmut Haller, Otar Khizaneishvili, Ibrahima Traoré and Vasily Khomutovsky.
