Avaí Futebol Clube is a Brazilian club based in Florianópolis in the state of Santa Catarina.
The team was founded in 1923 after a businessman Amadeu Horn donated football kits to a group of boys. The kits brought success to the boys as they won a match against some team called Humaitá. The achievement induced them to found a football team and Amadeu Horn helped the boys to do that.
Avaí spent the majority of seasons competing in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série B. As of 2013, they played only 7 seasons in the top flight with the 6th position in 2009 as their best ever finish. In 2010, the club made their first appearance in the Copa Sudamericana. Despite moderate success in major Brazilian competitions, Avaí is the most honored club in the state of Santa Catarina with 16 Santa Catarina State Championship titles and one Santa Catarina Cup.
The team are often nicknamed the Lions of the Island as the majority of Florianópolis area is located on an island. Avaí play their home matches at Ressacada stadium with the capacity of 17,800 seats.
