FC Baník Ostrava is a football club, founded in 1922 in Ostrava, the city’s Silesian part, by a group of miners. The team’s debut was on 4 March 1923 and that was the match against Slovan Ostrava reserves. Initially SK Slezská Ostrava was poor and they didn’t have their own field until 1925, when a field in Kamenec was built, then they moved to Stará střelnice. Since its foundation the team competed in the lowest division, being promoted shortly after that. In 1934 Slezská Ostrava earned the promotion to the Moravian-Silesian Division and in the 1936/37 season won it thus advancing to the First League. After three consecutive seasons in the First League the team dropped from it but returned in 1943. In 1949 they relegated to the Second League for one season, then advanced and soon changed the name to DSO Baník Ostrava. In 1959 the team moved to a new venue, Bazaly stadium in Slezská Ostrava.
Baník’s first achievement on the domestic arena was the 1972/73 Czechoslovak Cup and as a home cup winner the team advanced to the Cup Winners' Cup. In the 1974/75 season Baník reached the quarterfinal of the UEFA Cup.
In the 1974/75 season Baník was ranked 13th in the league. Nevertheless the following season the new manager, Jiří Rubáš improved the situation completely and helped the team to win their first league title. In 1978 Evžen Hadamczik became the head coach and that year he led the team to their second domestic cup victory. In the 1978/79 European Cup Winners’ Cup they reached the semifinals, being eliminated by Fortuna Düsseldorf. In 1980 Baník won Czechoslovak league title and competed in the UEFA European Cup, where they advanced to the quarterfinal. The team was the league title holder in 1981, the following two seasons they were runners-up and then Evžen Hadamczik left the club. That was the end of the Golden Era for the team.
Baník won the Czechoslovak Cup in 1991 at the expense of Spartak Trnava, whom they beat 6-1. Since then the team had mixed success. In 2005 they won Czech FA Cup, in 2004 and 2006 they were runners-up. Since the creation of the Gambrinus Liga Baník was the league title holder in 2004.
The team’s home ground is in Ostrava, the stadium is named Bazaly and has a capacity of 17,372.
