History and achievements
AS Bari is an Italian club from Bari founded in 1908. It is considered to be one of the most prestigious Southern Italian clubs and is even ranked 17th in all-time Serie A record.
In their early years it was quite difficult for Bari to break into professional football as the clubs from the South were not eagerly accepted to the league. Only Campania region was represented in the professional league meanwhile Bari played amateur football in their early days.
After the reorganization of Italian league system in 1929 the team got into the second division. Bari shortly announced about themselves as their striker Raffaele Costantino became the first Serie B player to ever be called up to the Italy national team.
Bari’s golden days were the 1930s and 1940s as the team competed on the footballing forefront for most of the period. In 1947 the team recorded their best 7th place finish in Serie A. However, in the 1950s their success changed to a downturn. In between 1950 and 1952, the team suffered three relegations in a row and found themselves in the fourth tier.
For the next 50 years Bari experienced numerous ups and downs competing in different levels of Italian football. The 1990s are worth mentioning as the team recorded their major silverware in the shape of Mitropa Cup in 1990. They are proud of their former striker Igor Protti who graced the club as a Serie A top scorer with 24 goals in the 1995/96 season. Moreover, at that time Bari became a feeder club for a renowned forward Antonio Cassano and defender Gianluca Zambrotta.
In the 2000s the club enjoyed much success with a notable coach Antonio Conte who led the team to their latest promotion to Serie A. However, Bari finished at the bottom of the 2010/11 table and dropped down to Serie B where they compete today.
Bari players are well known under the nickname the Cockerels and have this bird depicted on their logo. The team play their home matches at Stadio San Nicola which can hold up to 58,270 spectators.
