Its predecessor, Beijing Football Club, was founded in 1955. The club wasn’t to be starved of title success for too long as the side delivered its first silverware in 1957. Beijing Football Club would go on to seal another six league titles and established itself as one of the strongest teams in the Chinese National Football League. However, after the triumphant 1985 season the club’s fortunes went downhill. That exciting decade ended with Beijing starting to struggle and the club was eventually relegated in 1988.
On December 31, 1992, the modern Beijing Guoan Football Club was born. The Beijing Municipal Sports Committee and the CITIC Group are the founder members of the club. The 1995 season saw the team finish the Chinese Jia-A League runners-up. In 1997, 1998 and 2002 Beijing Guoan claimed bronze medals. The club’s total also comprises three Chinese FA Cups and two Chinese FA Super Cups.
The 2009 campaign was a year of glory for everyone connected with the club as Beijing was crowned Super League champions for the first time in its history. The team swept aside Hangzhou Greentown in the last fixture of the championship. The following year the club participated in the AFC Champions League but was eliminated at the group stage.
Many notable players, including the former Energie Cottbus midfielder Shao Jiayi and the former Eintracht target man Yang Chen, started out at Beijing Guoan.
