History and achievements
Sport Lisboa e Benfica is also known as Benfica or SLB. It is a Portuguese multisport club situated in Lisbon, Portugal.
The club was founded on February 28, 1904 at the meeting of 24 sport decision makers also attended by representatives of the current Big Three. Benfica has more than 14 million fans not only in Portugal but also all over the world being one of the best Portuguese clubs. Benfica is Portugal’s most honored club with 67 titles. The club set a sort of record: 32 Portuguese national championships, 24 Portuguese Cups and 4 League Cups. Benfica is one of the two teams in the history of the Portuguese national championship to have played 30 straight matches and remained unbeaten. The 1972/73 season was the most successful for Benfica with the total of 23 domestic and UEFA Cup victories. The club completed the season with 58 points in 30 matches.
Benfica was among the founders of Primeira Liga in 1933 and was never relegated throughout its history.
At the international level Benfica was the first and only one to have won the Latin Cup and 2 European Champion Clubs’ Cups. In 1961 the club played in the Intercontinental Cup.
Being a multisport club, Benfica develops numerous sports: futsal, hockey, basketball, handball, volleyball, athletics, triathlon, rugby, table tennis and judo. Taking into account its high popularity the club built a biggest base for the club fans. The club also built fan bases in Andorra, Angola, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Cape Verde, Croatia, France, Germany, Guinea-Bissau, Great Britain, Japan, Luxembourg, Macau, Mexico, Switzerland, the Netherlands and the USA.
