Bnei Sakhnin is a football team that was established in 1991 after a merger of Hapoel Sakhnin and Maccabi Sakhnin. For more than a decade the club was competing in the minor leagues and it was only in the season 2002/2003 that the side earned a ticket to the top flight.
The club finished 10th at the inaugural season and even claimed the State Cup, defeating in the final Hapoel Haifa 4-1. That victory gave the side a chance to compete in the UEFA Cup, where they were defeated in the first qualifying round by Newcastle United.
The highest finish of the team in the first division was the fourth place in the season 2007/2008.
The side is widely supported by the Arab Israelis. Bnei Sakhnin hosts its home games at the Doha Stadium that can sit up to 8,500. The club’s chairman is Shaher Khalaila.
