History and achievements
FC Borussia Dortmund was founded in December 1909 by a group of seminarians. They weren’t quite happy about their pastor who didn’t like football and had no intention to put it on the sport section list. The team’s name descends from the Latin name of Prussia and the name of brewery alongside the seminary.
At the very beginning the team had white and blue striped kits with a red stripe in the middle. Modern colors were introduced in 1913. At first Borussia played in various local leagues. Most of the squad was recruited for the First World War and just a few of them survived. As a result, the team had to be constructed once again.
Initially, the ‘black and yellow’ team had a strong rivalry with Schalke 04 from Gelsenkirchen. The Dortmund side suffered defeats over and over by their neighbors. Nevertheless, it was Schalke legend Ernst Kuzorra who guided Borussia to first success after taking on the managing job in 1936. After the end of the World War 2 the club was dismissed like many teams belonging to the Third Reich. There were numerous attempts to merge the club with other teams.
The first great success came to Borussia in 1947 only. That year it became a winner of Westphalia Cup beating Schalke 04 in the final. In 1949 the team was about to win the championship of the British occupation zone but it lost the game to Hamburg.
In 1956 and 1957 Borussia became the German national champion. It allowed the team to play in the UEFA Cup Winners Cup but it was not able to compete with teams from Manchester and Milan.
The 1990s became really glorious for the club when Borussia showed high level football and achieved excellent results. Under the management of famous Ottmar Hitzfeld that came to the team in 1991 the club got a new impulse and finished second in Bundesliga in the very first season.
The year of 1993 was quite successful for Borussia in Europe - it reached the UEFA Cup final but was defeated by Juventus from Torino. In 1995 and 1996 the team won national championship and in 1997 Borussia won the Champions League. By the way, it was Matthias Sammer, a player from Borussia Dortmund, who was called the best player of Europe that year.
Lately under the spell of Jurgen Klopp Borussia Dortmund has revived again and tops the German championship for the second consecutive year.
