Brøndby IF (Brøndbyernes Idrætsforening or BIF) initially was an amateur club, founded in 1964 after two local Brøndby clubs had merged. At that time there were 11 Danish leagues and Brøndby was in the 6th league. In 1967, the club got promotion to the Zealand series and later they earned promotion to the Denmark series.
In 1973, Finn Laudrup joined Brøndby and helped the club to win promotion to the 3rd Division. In 1977, the club climbed up to the 2nd Division and under the guidance of Tom Køhler Brøndby reached the top-flight (the 1st Division) in 1981. The team was strong enough not to drop behind the second place in the second half of 1980s till 1992. It included many successful Danish footballers and showed good results at the 1990/91 UEFA Cup, but when the team’s stars Bent Christensen, Lars Olsen and Peter Schmeichel left the club, things went worse. Brøndby’s results decreased and they hadn’t won the Danish Superliga until 1996 but then the club won three league titles in a row. In 2000, Norwegian manager Åge Hareide took charge of the club and brought them to the 2001/02 league title and Michael Laudrup led them to the 2004/05 Danish Championship win.
Since then the club faced crisis, several managers changed but they couldn’t make certain improvements.
The team play their home matches at Brøndby Stadium, its capacity is 29,000.
