
History and achievements
Cagliari was founded in 1920 in a small town of Cagliari, Sardinia. The team spent the first half of the century rotating between Seria C and Seria B and it was the year of 1964 when Cagliari was promoted to the top tier for the first time.
The glorious spell of the team started in 1968 as Cagliari along with Fiorentina and Milan was contending the league title, later on in the season 1969/1970 players like Riva, Cera and Domenghini formed the side that claimed the title for the first time losing only two games in the season and conceding just 11 goals. Six years later the club faced a decline and was classed down. The troubles continued as Cagliari dropped even lower to Serie C1 in the 1980s.
A few years later under the management of Claudio Ranieri Cagliari progressed and returned to Seria A though they yo-yoed between Setie B and Serie A for the following decade finfishing the 2011/2012 season on the 15th place in Serie A. The highest achievement of the club on the international level to this day is the UEFA Cup semi-final in 1994.
The team hosted its home games at the Stadio Sant’Elia till March 2012 but now uses Stadio Is Arenas. The club’s crest features blue and red colors of the team, the Sardinian flag and the foundation year.
The current head coach of the club is Massimo Ficcadenti.
