Cerezo Osaka is a Japanese football team, currently playing in J. League 1. The team is based in Osaka and Cerezo in its title means ‘cherry tree’.
The team was founded in 1957 and was named Yanmar Diesel, it was a founder of the Japan Soccer League. Since then they won four league titles and played in the top flight until 1990, when they suffered relegation and played in Japan Football League in 1992.
In 1993, the club was named Osaka Football Club Ltd., soon renamed into Cerezo. In 1994, they won the Japan Football League thus getting promotion to the top division, the J. League Division 1, that year they reached the finals of the Emperor’s Cup, where they lost to Bellmare Hiratsuk. In 2001, Cerezo finished the league on the 16th place and suffered relegation nevertheless the next season the finished the J runner-up and returned to the top flight, where they played until 2007, as in 2006 they faced relegation and returned to the J1 in 2010, having finished the J2 second in 2009.
Cerezo plays their home matches at Kincho Stadium and some big games they play at Nagai Stadium.
