R. Charleroi S.C. is a football team based in the city of Charleroi. The club was founded in 1904 and reached the Promotion (then second division) in 1924. It took the side two more decades in order to climb to the top division of Belgian football, where Charleroi secured a strong mid-position in the late 1950s and 1960s. The season 1968/1969 saw the team finishing as a runner-up in the league which is still the best finish of the side in its history. Recently the club was competing in the Second division, though after the season 2011/2012 received promotion to the Swiss Super League.
The club progressed to the final of the Belgian Cup two times, yet lost on both occasions to Beveren in 1978 and to Standard Liège in 1993.
The major rival of the side is the club ROC de Charleroi-Marchienne, thought he team currently competes in the third division. Charleroi hosts its home games at the Stade du Pays de Charleroi that sits up to 25,000 football fans. The chairman of the team is Fabien Debecq.
The colors of the club are white and black. The nicknames of the team are the Zebras and Les Caroles.
