History and achievements
Football club Chievo from a small town with the same name was founded in 1929 and two years later the team participated in its first official match. In the early days Chievo played in the regional leagues while the rapid promotion started in 1964 with Luigi Campedelli becoming a new owner of the team. Chievo achieved Serie C2 in 1986 and later in 1992 the promotion to Serie B was granted.
In 2001 Chievo stunned many finishing 3rd in Serie B and reaching the top flight of Italian football. In its first season they showed spectacular football in the top tier and were on the 5th position at the end of the season. Chievo continued to reach high standings untill it was relegated to Serie B in 2007. The club bounced back in 2008 and from that year onwards has been competing in Serie A without dropping in a class.
Chievo shares their home ground Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi with their rival Verona. The arena has a capacity of 38,000 and is situated in Verona.
The colors of the team are blue and yellow. The most prominent nickname of the club is flying donkeys and it was given to the club by the Verona supporters who claimed that donkeys would start flying before Chievo got in Seria A. As soon as Chievo reached the top flight of Italian football the fans proudly took the nickname ‘flying donkeys’.
