Cobresal is a Chilean football club from El Salvador, Chile, founded in 1979. It was founded by the group of miners from the local copper mine establishment and was initially considered as an amateur team. In a year, the club was claimed professional and got into the second tier of Chilean football league system.
Cobresal made their first run into the top flight in 1982. In fact, the 1980s were the most fruitful period for the club as they climbed up to their highest ever runner-up position in the Primera División in 1984 and 1988. Moreover, they tasted the Copa Libertadores action in 1986 for the first time and in 1987 Cobresal made their first Chilean cup success. In the 1990s, the team found themselves on a downward spiral. They spent several seasons in the Primera B and only in 2001 they returned to the top flight and play there till the date.
Cobresal are proud of their former players who became the club’s legends such as Iván Zamorano, Sergio Salgado and Rubén Martínez. The team are often nicknamed the Miners due to the club’s origin. They play their home matches at Estadio El Cobre with the capacity of 20,752 seats.
