Club Atlético Colón is an Argentinean soccer team located in Santa Fe. The club takes its name from the famous navigator Christopher Columbus.
Colón was established by a group of students in 1905. The side initially competed in the local league of Santa Fe and won it 14 times. In 1947 the club gained entry to the Argentine Football Association. But it took 18 years for the team to be promoted to the Primera División where Colón could pit its wits against some of the best sides in Argentina.
However, in 1981 the club was unable to cope with the higher standard and after a spirited fight it dropped back to the lower league. The year of 1995 saw Los Sabaleros return to the elite division.
In 1997 Colón took part in the Copa CONMEBOL for the first time in its history. The team made a good fist of it as they progressed to the semi-final to suffer a defeat from Lanús. In 1998 the club participated in the Copa Libertadores and even reached the quarter-final. In 2003 Colón qualified for the Copa Sudamericana.
Estadio Brigadier General Estanislao López, the club`s home ground, is the tenth biggest stadium in Argentina. It has seating for 32 500 football fans. Roberto Sensini is the current manager of Colón.
