History and achievements
Cruz Azul is a football club in Mexico and has the nicknames La Máquina Celeste, La Maquina or Los Cementeros. Initially it was an amateur club, established in 1927. It was based in Jasso, Hidalgo. In 1960 the club gained the status of a professional one and began to compete in the Segunda División. In 1964 Jorge Marik, a Hungarian manager, brought them to Segunda División title thus they gained promotion to the top flight. In 1968/69 the team won Mexican Primera División. In the following decade Cruz Azul won the league title six times. After such a success the team was nicknamed La Máquina Celeste. Thw following league title was in 1997 when Cruz Azul won Invierno, they also won two Apertura titles (2008 and 2009) and Clausura in 2008.
In 2012 the team’s name was changed from Club Deportivo, Social y Cultural Cruz Azul, A.C. to Cruz Azul Futbol Club, A.C.
Cruz Azul won CONCACAF Champions League titles or CONCACAF Champions’ Cup, as the tournament was called before 2008, five times (1969, 1970, 1971, 1996 and 1997) and twice they finished runners-up (2009, 2010). In 2001 the team was runners-up in the Copa Libertadores.
Their home ground is the Estadio Azul; it is located in Mexico City where they moved in 1996, before that the team had used the Estadio Azteca.
