FC Dnipro is a football club from the city of Dnipropetrovsk. The name of the club refers to the biggest river in Ukraine and one of the symbols of the country.
The team was established in 1918 by the workers of the Petrovsky factory under the name BRIT. In 1926 the team was renamed to Petrovets, yet in 1936 the side played in the Soviet championship under the title Stal (steel in English). After merging with Dynamo Dnipropetrovsk the side was reformed as Metalurh. In the 1950s the team played in lower leagues and managed to progress the semi-final of the USSR Cup only once.
In 1961 the new sponsor of the club Yugmash (machine-producing factory) changed the team to Dnieper. The year 1968 was the time when Valery Lobanovsky came into the squad and consequently helped the team to reach the semi-finals of the USSR Cup twice. Yet only after managers Volodymyr Yemets and Hennadiy Zhizdik came into the club Dniepro secured a place in the mid-table of the Top League and later even claimed the title of the championship twice in 1983 and 1988.
In the Ukrainian championship the team remained one of the contenders of the title, finishing as a runner-up in 1993 and taking bronze medals in 1992, 1995, 1996, 2001 and 2004.
The major rival of the side is Metalist Kharkiv.
The first stadium of the club was Meteor in Dnipropetrovsk that was built in 1966. In 2005 Dnipro Arena was opened that sits 31,000 football fans.
