History and achievements
Drogheda United is a professional football club located in Drogheda, Ireland. The home ground of the club is Hunky Dorys Park. The stadium has a capacity of 1,500 seats. The team was established, when Drogheda United and Drogheda F.C. merged into one club in 1975.
In 2007 the team entitled the Premier Division for the first time in the history of the club, which meant that Drogheda United earned an opportunity to make their debut in the Champions League Qualifiers. The team progressed to the second round, where they lost to Dynamo Kiev.
Drogheda United won the 2005 FAI Cup, 2 League of Ireland Cups and 2 Setanta Sports Cups. In the 1983/1984 season the club debuted in the UEFA Cup, where it was thrashed by Tottenham Hotspur in the first round. Thanks to their FAI Cup win in 2005, the team got qualified for the UEFA Cup for the second time.
In 2009 season Drogheda United lost the vast majority of footballers and the manager, because of bankruptcy. The newly appointed manager had to sign semi-professionals and free agents. As a result, the club remained in the bottom of the league table for the whole season, later being relegated to a lower division. In the next season Drogheda United faced relegation again, but was rehabilitated after the dissolution of Sporting Fingal in 2011.
On 23 September 2012 Drogheda won the EA Sports Cup, beating Shamrock Rovers 3-1 in the final match and thus gaining their first trophy since 2007.
