History and achievements
FC Dynamo Moscow was founded in April 1923 by Felix Dzerzhinsky – it was the first sports society with this name. It is noteworthy that only two football clubs participated in all editions of the Soviet top division championship: Dinamo Moscow and Dynamo Kyiv.
The team played their first official match in the summer of 1923 in the Moscow championship: Dynamo lost to Krasnaya Presnya 3-2. The first big victory of the team dates back to 1926 – they won the Moscow championship. It was the same year when the club emblem with a diamond and letter ‘D’ was invented. Over next few years they repeated their success in the capital tournament five more times.
Dynamo won the first Soviet championship (1936) and in 1937 the ‘Militia men’ made a double having won both the national championship and the cup.
After World War II Dynamo kept up the pace being a huge threat for their opponents. In the 1949 championship the club set the record which still remains unbeaten: 104 goals were scored in 34championship fixtures. The 60s became a crisis and the things only got worse over the next two decades. Dynamo won its last national gold only in 1976. In 1972 the team played in the European Cup Winners’ Cup final, but lost to Glasgow Rangers 3-2.
After the breakdown of the USSR the team lost many of their supporters. Currently, Dynamo Moscow is the least visited Premier League football club of the capital. In the 90s the team was among the Russian football leaders but never won the championship, the highest result being the 2nd place in 1994. Dinamo saw the beginning of a new era in the 2000s: the club got very good financing, the management were trying to attract supporters to the stadium with European superstars who, nevertheless, did not stay in the team for a long time. The team suffered from constant coaching turnover: there used to be famous specialists and young domestic talents in charge. However, good results are fairly recent. Currently, Dynamo is one of the most spectacular and at the same time unpredictable teams of the Russian Premier League.
Dynamo Moscow is an eleven-time USSR champion and six-time USSR Cup winner. They also won the USSR Super Cup in 1977. As for the modern era, Dynamo won the Russian Cup in 1995 and could become a two-time winner in 1999 but lost the final to Zenit.
